About Sophie Speed Sextet Sophie Speed Sextet is a jazz ensemble renowned for their captivating performances, and soulful interpretations of both Sophie’s original compositions and timeless standards. Formed by North East tenor saxophonist Sophie Speed (now based in Leeds), the group of talented recent graduates of Leeds Conservatoire combine their passion for jazz with a deep appreciation for the genre's rich history and influences.
Drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Scott Hamilton, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Dewey Redman, Sophie Speed Sextet brings a fresh perspective to the jazz tradition while honouring its roots. Their music effortlessly combines the classic elements of swing, bebop, and hard bop with modern sensibilities, creating a captivating experience that appeals to both devoted jazz aficionados and newcomers to the genre.
At the core of the group's sound is the dynamic interplay between the band members, characterised by their individual virtuosity and collective energy. Led by saxophonist Sophie Speed, whose exciting and emotive playing sets the tone for each performance, the sextet showcases the remarkable talents of its members: Olivia Cuttill on trumpet, Liam Mason on piano, Jaden Hart on bass, Miles Pillinger on drums, and Nathan Lawson on guitar. You can also find Sophie, Olivia and Miles playing in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO).
